The White Golden Retriever

The Scottish are known to have invented many fine things. And if you talk to a Scot you may find out they have in fact invented pretty much everything that exists in the known universe!

Some of the more notable and provable inventions include  the steam engine improvements thanks to James Watt, the telephone, Alexander Graham Bell was born in Scotland, mathematical logarithms thanks to John Napier and of course who could forget Scotch!

While not strictly speaking an invention, the Golden Retriever originally hailed from Scotland evidently from the highland estate of The Baron Tweedmouth. In 1952 the breeding records of the Baron were published clearing up all myths as to which breeds originally created the Golden Retriever and any lingering doubt of the dogs origins.

Since then there have been considerably more variations of the breed. There is the American definition, a Canadian breeding standard and of course a British standard.

Each of them define the breed a little differently and each of them define what is acceptable to their particular kennel club standard.

The White Golden Retriever for example is a beautiful dog with all of the same affable qualities as his American cousin, but falls outside of the American standard. Having said that, you can still register your White with the American Kennel Club as a Golden Retriever of course, but it’s considered more European.

Some of the differences follow, lets start with the coat. The coat was and still is the strength of the breed for practical reasons. This dog is a great swimmer and a great gun dog and can easily traverse diverse conditions such as the underbrush, streams and rivers. The American dog tends to have a longer fur and lots of coat.

The European White Golden has a dense coat but the range of length allowed is tighter.

The makeup of the body is considerably different as well. White Golden Retrievers have a large mouth and a long nose. The American version by comparison has a shorter nose.

White Golden Retrievers tend to be stockier with a more squarish head.

American Kennel Club will allow amber colored eyes, but not so with the European version, the definition is more strict.

As you can imagine their are differences with respect to ear placement and shape also. The White Golden Retriever has the eyes at the same level as the ears whereas the American version of the standard calls for high ears well to the rear of the eyes.

This is aside from variations in coat color is the most prominent and noticeable difference. The heads of the dogs actually appear quite different.

Despite the esthetic variations in each of these dogs, the White Golden Retriever possess the same personality qualities as their America cousins. They are easy going, smart, fun to be around, affable and just love people.

They love to play, love to be with kids, have the same need to burn off excess energy and are just as smart as the red version of the dog.

If you are looking for a great all around family dog, the White Golden Retriever will fill the bill nicely.
